Welcome to the Master of Science in Information Engineering (MScIE) programme at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). This distinctive programme provides cutting-edge, cross-disciplinary education in the expansive field of information and communication technology.
Established in 1997, the MScIE programme is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of talents, who are not only technically competent but also business-minded and well-versed in the latest technological and commercial trends. Our curriculum offers a diverse range of compelling courses covering fundamental and practical aspects of communications, networking, cybersecurity, internet of things, data science, technology management, and other emerging fields.
The Department of Information Engineering, founded in 1989 by Professor Charles K. Kao—Nobel laureate and the father of optical communications—is the first and only academic department of its kind in Hong Kong. Our department is proud to host world-class faculty members whose expertise spans electrical engineering and computer science. Currently, we have 29 full-time faculty members, among them 7 IEEE Fellows, 1 ACM Fellow, 1 Optica Fellow, and 6 HKIE Fellows.
The MScIE programme offers exceptional students the opportunity—one that is rare among similar programmes—to work closely with faculty on pioneering research projects. Many of our alumni have greatly benefited from it, with some publishing papers in top journals and conferences, and some showcasing outstanding research potential and pursing PhD studies. In addition, the programme provides valuable internship opportunities, allowing students to gain industry experience. Our interns have received high praise from local employers. Our graduates have secured jobs at leading companies and organizations such as ASTRI, Baidu, Tencent, TCL, Microsoft, Intel, IBM, Huawei, Hong Kong Telecom, Bank of China, and PwC. After a few years in technical positions, many alumni advance to management roles.
Join our programme to take a significant step toward realizing your professional dreams!

Founded in 1989 by Professor Charles Kao, the father of optical communications, the Department of Information Engineering is the first and still the only academic department of its kind in Hong Kong. The department has world-class professors with research areas spanning electrical engineering and computer science. Out of its current 24 regular faculty members, 7 are IEEE Fellows and 2 IEE Fellows.
Throughout these 30 odd years, in addition to educating many undergraduate and postgraduate students, the department has made many significant achievements in research and societal contributions. For example, it helped Hong Kong to make its first connection to the Internet; it helped set up a large education network for schools to use; and IE professors led (co-PI and PI) the only two Area-of-Excellence projects for engineering in Hong Kong, the largest kinds of research projects funded by Hong Kong government.
Established in 1997, the Master of Science in Information Engineering (MScIE) programme is an elite taught-postgraduate programme offered by the Department of Information Engineering, CUHK. Extending the Department’s mission of “Building a Connected, Secure and Smart Society in the Age of Digital Transformation”, MScIE provides a flexible curriculum, holistic learning experience, and extensive alumni network to its students.
Information technology (IT) has dramatically changed the lives of the individuals and organizations in last two decades. The programme design comprises theory and practice of information engineering over a wide range of emerging topics including Internet of Things (IoT), Machine Learning, Big Data, 5G Communications etc., which equip graduates with the expertise needed to excel in the ever-changing technology environment.
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) was ranked #47 in the QS World University Rankings 2024.
Founded in 1989 by Professor Charles Kao, the father of optical communications, the Department of Information Engineering is the first and still the only academic department of its kind in Hong Kong. It has gained a worldwide reputation for its leading-edge research and top-quality programmes.
The MScIE curriculum is designed to cover core concepts in the field of information engineering, including
In addition, the curriculum offers courses in technology management and an optional research project (subject to student-research supervisor selection). These components aim to equip engineering students with the skills and knowledge needed to tackle the challenges in the ever-changing society.
The MScIE curriculum is comprised of courses offered by the Department of Information Engineering, as well as courses from other MSc programmes under the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Business Administration.
MScIE offers opportunities to nurture students with high research potential by allowing them to conduct a credit-bearing research project under the supervision of IE professors during their studies.
