Admission Requirements

MScIE admits outstanding new members every year through the Graduate School. Our students are from the renowned universities worldwide including local universities, top overseas universities (e.g. UC Berkeley, University of Wisconsin-Madison and University of Melbourne) as well as Mainland China universities in Project 985 and Project 211.

Admission Requirements

For applying for Master’s Programme, applicants shall have:

  • graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, or related fields, normally with Second Class Honours or higher, or an average grade of “B” or better in his/her undergraduate course of study; or
  • completed a related course of study in a tertiary educational institute and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honours degree in related fields; or
  • graduated with a first degree in other fields and have a relevant background, e.g. having taken undergraduate/postgraduate courses related to Information Engineering and/or having work experiences in Information Technology related industries.

 

Note: The University reserves the right to suspend admission of a programme if it is under-enrolled.

English Language Requirements for Admission

To fulfill the minimum English language requirements for admission to postgraduate programmes, applicants should have:

  1. obtained a degree from a university in Hong Kong; or
  2. achieved scores in the following English Language tests as indicated:
    1. TOEFL: 550 (Paper-based)/79 (Internet-based);
    2. IELTS (Academic): 6.5;
    3. GMAT: Band 21 (Verbal); or
  3. obtained a pass grade in English in one of the following examinations:
    1. Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (AS Level);
    2. Hong Kong Higher Level Examination;
    3. CUHK Matriculation Examination;
    4. General Certificate of Education Examination (GCE) Advanced Level (A-Level)/Advanced Subsidiary Level (AS-Level); or
  4. achieved Level 4 or above in the English Language subject of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Examination; or
  5. obtained a recognized professional qualification, provided that the examination was conducted in English.

Programme-Specific Requirements

Normally, applicant must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Have obtained a Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering from a recognized university with at least Second Class Honors;
  • Achieving an average grade of not lower than “B; and
  • Fulfill the “English Language Proficiency Requirement” as stipulated by the CUHK Graduate School.

Admission Scholarship

MScIE provides admission scholarships to new students based on their exceptional academic or non-academic achievements. Students do not need to apply for these scholarships. The MScIE Management Committee, comprising the Programme Director and professors from the Department of Information Engineering, will identify eligible new students. The amount of scholarship awarded varies based on the candidate’s performance and achievements.

Applications will be processed on a rolling basis until all places have been filled.  Therefore, early applications are strongly encouraged. If places are no longer available, the subsequent applications received may not be considered.
