Research@MScIE

Research@MScIE

The MScIE programme inherits the department’s world-class research prestige and offers opportunities to cultivate students with high research potentials.

MScIE students have the chance to undertake a credit-bearing research project supervised by professors from the Department of Information Engineering. Students completing research projects can earn 3 units in a semester, or up to 6 units (over 2 semesters) during their MScIE studies. Students may begin their research projects as early as the start of the academic year.

Research Courses Offered by MScIE
The MScIE programme offers two advanced research and development courses:
  • IEMS5910 Advanced Research and Development Project I
  • IEMS5920 Advanced Research and Development Project II (Prerequisite: IEMS5910)

Students work independently with the supervision of a faculty member on a research project in Information Engineering, with the topic and scope of the study agreed upon between the student and supervisor. A project report is required upon completion of the course.

Remarks:
  1. Students normally begin the MSc research project by undertaking IEMS5910 (3 units) in Fall Semester in their year of entry, under the supervision of an IE professor (upon mutual agreement).
  2. Only students who successfully complete IEMS5910 are eligible to take IEMS5920, and they must do so under the supervision of the same IE professor who supervised their IEMS5910 project.
MScIE encourages outstanding research project students to apply for local and overseas PhD programs while still enrolled in the MScIE programme. Many MScIE graduates have successfully been admitted to PhD programs at universities in Singapore and the USA, among other locations.
Further Research Opportunity

Upon graduation, students may have the opportunity to work as research assistants under the supervision of IE professors. Some research projects may also be co-supervised by industry partners such as Huawei Noah’s Ark Lab and ASTRI.

Research Excellence

MScIE students and alumni have produced world-class research outputs, including publications in academic journals and referred conference proceedings. Some examples of these publications include:

  • IEEE Infocom
  • IEEE ICC
  • IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory (ISIT)
  • ACM MobiCom
  • ACM SIGCHI
  • World Wide Web Conference (WWW)

Industry Collaboration

Industry Collaboration

MScIE maintains a strong relationship with industry partners through our alumni, research collaborators, and industry co-advisors. With the support of local and global companies, we provide our students with a range of cooperative education experiences that combine classroom-based learning with practical work experience. These experiences include company visits, career seminars, recruitment seminars, and guest speakers and alumni from the industry.

The program additionally provides credit-bearing internship course (IEMS5930) for students. Following a rigorous selection process, eligible students have the chance to work under the guidance of an IE professor and an industry advisor within the company.
